The Kalendar Symbol

The woman of Samaria at the ancestral well. There, she meets Jesus, of whom she said, “He told me all that I ever did.”

Commentary

Separated from its instinctual core and rooted sense of self-sameness, the self comes at last into its own. At this stage, it shares the semblance of separateness and a sexually-rooted identity. Through application of the senses, the self begins to relate itself to others much as a cell extends itself into cytoplasm through flagella. Like a deep well designed by ancestors, the self seems to contain inexhaustible resources for consumption. But it is not possible to tap that well on one’s own; even Jesus, possessed of sublime knowledge, needed the help of a good Samaritan to quench his thirst.
