The Kalendar Symbol

A duck pond and its brood. They sleep in a row, the eye toward the group closed, while the other eye is open.

Commentary

Neither entirely free nor entirely restrained, the members of a duck brood assume their respective positions in a natural hierarchy. In this manner, their capacities for survival are dramatically enhanced. The group serves them, and they look out for the welfare of each other member. Threats may encroach at any time from above or below. The duck pond, once still, ripples with activity seen and unseen. A rejected duckling bears terrible hardship; it may not survive the night. Lost and alone, it is utterly dispirited.
